12 Practical Tips That Truly Work
Learning Serbian is much more than memorizing grammar rules or collecting vocabulary. It’s a journey where atmosphere, support, and the right method matter just as much as textbooks and exercises. At Centar Slovo, we’ve been teaching foreigners for many years — Russian speakers, English speakers, Spanish speakers — both in Belgrade and online. And over time, we’ve seen exactly which habits help students start speaking quickly and which ones slow them down.
This text is a warm, honest, and professional guide to how to learn Serbian effectively — no matter your age, background, or level.

1. It is okay to make mistakes — this is how you learn
When you learn a new language, you will make mistakes. Everyone does. Even the best students make mistakes. Do not worry about it. Do not feel shy. Mistakes help your brain learn faster. So when you speak Serbian, be brave. Say the sentence even if you think it is not perfect. Every time you try, you grow.
2. Learn short phrases, not single words
Many students try to memorize long lists of words. But this is not the best way to learn Serbian. Serbian people speak using short, simple phrases. For example:
“Dobar dan!”
“Hvala puno.”
“Mogu li da pitam?”
If you learn phrases like these, you will feel more ready to speak in real life. Words are important, but phrases help you talk. This makes learning easier, especially for beginners.
3. Practice a little every day
You do not need long lessons. You do not need to study for hours. A short practice every day — even ten minutes — is enough to help your brain remember Serbian words and sounds.
Everyday practice is stronger than a long lesson once a week. Small steps are easier and give better results.
4. Try not to stop for a long time
If you stop learning Serbian for a month, it will be harder to start again. You may forget many things. That is normal — it happens to everyone.
To keep the language alive in your mind, try simple things like:
watch a short Serbian video
read one short sentence
listen to a Serbian song
say one phrase to a friend
These small actions help a lot.
5. English speakers: learn the new Serbian sounds slowly and kindly
If English is your first language, some Serbian sounds will be new for you. Sounds like č, ć, dž, đ, lj, nj may feel strange. Do not worry — they only need practice. In our Serbian courses, we help you learn these sounds step by step. After some time, students usually say: “It is not scary anymore — now it is fun!”
6. Watch Serbian movies, cartoons and YouTube videos
Watching Serbian content is a wonderful way to learn. You can hear how people really speak, how they use emotion and how fast or slow they talk.
If you are a beginner, use subtitles. You can see the words and hear them at the same time. This helps both reading and listening.
Even short videos can help you learn Serbian online from anywhere in the world.
7. Speak Serbian from the first week
You do not need to wait until you “know enough.” You can start speaking Serbian from your very first week.Start with small things:
“Dobar dan.”
“Ja sam Ana.”
“Jednu kafu, molim.”
Speaking early helps your brain get used to Serbian. Students who speak from the beginning learn faster and feel more confident.
8. Use all parts of the language
To learn Serbian well, try to practice all four skills:
speaking
listening
reading
writing
If you only speak and never read, it becomes harder later. If you only read and never talk, you will feel afraid to speak. A little of everything helps you grow in a balanced way.
9. Repeat things many times
Repetition is very important. When you hear or say a phrase many times, your brain begins to use it automatically. This is the moment when Serbian starts to feel natural inside your mind. This is how students move from beginner level to higher levels easily.
10. Remember: some days will be easy, some will be hard
Learning Serbian is like walking up a small hill. Sometimes the road is easy. Sometimes the road feels slow or heavy. This is normal. Do not feel sad on difficult days. They are part of learning. Even when it feels like nothing works, your brain is still learning in the background.
11. Listen carefully — Serbian questions help you find the answer
Serbian is a very logical language. In many conversations, the question already shows the answer. For example, if someone asks:“Da li želiš vodu?”You can answer:“Želim vodu.”If the question says “kog?” you can answer with “tog.”This small trick helps beginners speak faster.
12. Keep your sentences short and simple
When you speak Serbian, try not to make long and complicated sentences at the beginning. Simple sentences are powerful and easy to understand. With time, your Serbian will grow and your sentences will become longer naturally.
Learning Serbian is a wonderful journey. It helps you feel at home in Serbia, make new friends, understand culture and speak with people around you. You do not need to be perfect. You only need to be patient and kind to yourself. Every day brings a small step forward.
At Centar Slovo, our Serbian language school, we create a friendly and safe place where students can learn Serbian slowly, peacefully and with joy. We are always here to support you. 🌿
