March in Serbia is a special time for everyone who loves or learns the Serbian language. This is when the annual cultural event March – The Month of the Serbian Language takes place — a unique initiative dedicated to promoting Serbian language, culture, and tradition.

In 2026, the event is held for the fifth time, bringing together linguists, educators, and language enthusiasts in Belgrade. This year’s program explores a wide range of creative topics — from imagining Serbian in a message to extraterrestrials, to the musicality of stylistic devices and the richness of Andrić’s prose language.

You can explore the full program on the official website: martmesecsrpskog.rs

Centar Slovo at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade

On March 12, Centar Slovo, a leading Serbian language school in Belgrade, took part in the event with a special presentation at the Faculty of Philology.

Instead of a traditional lecture, we chose a more engaging and authentic format — an open dialogue between teachers and students learning Serbian as a foreign language. Our session, titled Seven Cases Later: Serbian Through the Eyes of Foreigners, focused on the real experience of learning Serbian from the inside.

The presentation featured our teachers Dijana, Ivanna, and Natalija, along with students Elena, Iskander, Varvara, Olga, and Anastasia.

Learning Serbian: Real Stories, Real Experience

Our goal was simple: to show what it truly means to learn Serbian — beyond textbooks and grammar rules.

Our teachers shared their insights on how the perception of the Serbian language changes when seen through a foreign learner’s perspective. One of the most inspiring aspects is how learning the language naturally leads to a deeper understanding of Serbian culture.

Our students spoke openly about their journey:

  • which aspects of Serbian felt surprisingly easy (such as the “write as you speak” principle)

  • the biggest challenges they faced (accentuation, cases, and unfamiliar sounds)

  • funny and sometimes touching misunderstandings along the way

  • how learning Serbian helped them connect with the culture on a deeper level

The presentation was lively, emotional, and highly interactive. The audience actively participated, and the most powerful moments came from personal stories — authentic, relatable, and full of insight.

The response was so positive that our students were invited to continue the conversation on Radio Belgrade, where they will share more about their experience of learning Serbian.

This experience once again confirmed what we strongly believe: learning a language is not just about grammar and exercises. It’s about communication, humor, connection, and the courage to explore something new.

We are grateful to the organizers of March – The Month of the Serbian Language for the opportunity to be part of such an inspiring event — and we’re already looking forward to the next one.
